Let me explain -
The food and architecture lived up to expectations. However, we did not like that the beaches were packed with sun loungers and umbrella’s owned by private restaurants and bars charging 40-50 euros per sun lounger.. with tiny spaces for non-paying people to enjoy the beach (we paid for the sun loungers but only because there was no space in the tiny free zone available). Beaches are naturally occurring and should be accessible and enjoyed by all, not just those with money. It is also very ugly to have so many sun loungers and umbrella’s on such small beaches.
We left feeling like nature (beaches) is being exploited and ruined for financial gain. We also felt like tourists were being exploited as a result. We’ve never been to any beach in the world where in order to enjoy a beach you have to pay 150+ euros (for families). It isn’t ethical.
It also ruins the natural beauty of Amalfi which is why people go.
I presume the local council issue licenses to local bars and restaurants who then financially exploit the beaches and tourists. I think this needs to be looked into otherwise it will deter people from returning, like us.
